Christmas Songs

Let’s go for a third Christmas post!  This past weekend, while we put up our decorations, we listened to holiday appropriate songs.  I had forgotten how much I love the sound of the classic Christmas songs.  Songs like “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” by Burl Ives, “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby, “The Christmas Song” by Nat King Cole, “Baby it’s Cold Outside” by Johnny Mercer and Margaret Whiting, and “Frosty the Snowman” by Jimmy Durante.  There’s just no better versions than these in my opinion.  Sure there are great versions being put out now, but I love the classic/original versions of these carols.  But my all time favorite Christmas song is Elvis’s Blue Christmas performed by Porky Pig.  It’s the first song I have to play every year.  And so… take it away Porky. ^_^

…and yes I realized it’s not Mel Blanc, but this guy does a fantastic Porky, I’m willing to over look it.

Vince Guaraldi’s version of ‘O Tannenbaum’ from ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ is one of my favorites. Starts off regularly, then goes into a jazzy stream of consciousness.

Don’t listen to many x-mas song anymore. But, when I was growing up, we had nonstop seasonal tunes going on starting mid-December. Many of the song you listed above were on the list, but we also had classical pieces thrown in. Handel’s Messiah is the piece that comes most immediately to mind, but there are many, many others. I’ve long forgotten the pieces and performing choir, but there is a live performance of traditional songs that some boys choir puts on. I think it was broadcast on NPR. My mom never misses it.

I ain’t late ’till the 26th! My family has some odd ones. Topping the list are “Merry Bloody X-Mas” and “Snoopy’s Christmas”. Shamefuly,I don’t know the artists. “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” also plays a bit,and quite a bit of Irish singing; probably The Rovers. Unrelated, but typing with a PSP is a PAAAIN.
