Old TV
The other day I was talking with a friend about cartoons we grew up with. He mentions RugRats and I was like… that show was on when I was in college. We found out that what I was seeing was the final seasons of the show near the end of the 90’s but still, it’s not a show I grew up with. Funny thing is, I didn’t feel old, I just felt that he was young.
Shows/cartoons I did grow up with he never watched or only heard of. Shows like Battle of the Planets, The Little Prince (I loved that cartoon), Fraggle Rock, Muppet Babies, Dungeons and Dragons, Pole Position, Donkey Kong, Pac Man, The Get Along Gang, Reading Rainbow, Sesame Street, Commander Marc and the Secret City, Snorks, Duck Tails, Tail Spin, Rescue Rangers, The Real Ghostbusters, and for some reason I remember watching a Jackson 5 cartoon. Watching any of these shows now would be horrible I’m sure so I’m quite happy to just remember them in my head.
What cartoons or shows did you watch as a kid?

now, i’m a 90’s kid, but 80’s cartoons are far superior. the only cartoons i enjoyed from the 90’s were pokemon, digimon, dragonball z, yugioh, and sort of naruto. oh, and yu yu hakusho i guess too. what shows i really enjoy though, are the 80’s classics like thundercats and gi joe, silver hawks, transformers, teenage mutant ninja turtles, and others like that. i mean, you cant beat the 80’s in terms of cartoons. and they always had the best theme songs too. but i only grew up with two of those shows, TMNT and transformers. the others were all done being shown by the time i was a kid, and i only learned of them recently.

For me it was the Disney stuff (Rescue Rangers, Duck Tails, Tail Spin, et al) mostly, along with TMNT, Garfield and Friends, and probably a handful of other awful things. Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Other Mario shows. The weird Sonic.
Most of the Disney Afternoon shows though (RR, Duck Tails, etc) actually hold up well. They aren’t all 100% great, but they’ve stood the test of time better than many. I only recently rediscovered Rescue Rangers, and was delighted to be reminded how much I loved it, but also how good it still is.

Despite growing up in New Zealand, I managed to see the majority of the same cartoons as what was aired over in the US. Earliest I can remember was Flintstones/Jetsons, Sailor Moon, Voltron, He Man, Scooby-Doo, Thunderbirds, Fraggle Rock, Dungeons & Dragons, Transformers etc.
It was the Disney era of Rescue Rangers, Tailspin, Duck Tales, Sonic SatAM, Beast Wars, Batman and so forth that I consider the pinnacle of cartoon entertainment to this day, and remember most fondly.
It was around the time of the rise of Nickelodeon than my interest in cartoons began to wane with what felt like the start of the drop in quality as I progressed through high school, and stopped watching altogether once I left home for college. Granted, that was more because I didn’t own a tv and was more interested in downloading anime and playing computer games at the time.
The only classic I never saw at all – probably due to licensing issues or something silly, was Thundercats. It took me years after being online before I actually found out what the heck people were talking about when they mentioned it!

The shows that I remember most prominently are (not in any particular order):
-Tom and Jerry
-Rocky and Bullwinkle
-Merry Melodies
-The Pink Panther
-Starblazers (blew my mind as a kid)
-Transformers
-Thundercats
-TMNT
-Rescue Rangers
-Ducktales
-The Electric Company (which is a great watch as an adult, btw–very trippy and had Morgan Freeman)
-3-2-1 Contact (anybody remember the Bloodhound Gang?)
-Fat Albert
-Garfield
-Inspector Gadget
There are others that I saw from time to time (some mentioned by others), but none of them come to mind like these.

TV and I were never really on a first name basis…I only really started watching TV after I figured out there was more entertainment than books. And my TV shows consisted primarily of shows that came out of Mainframe Studios; Shows like ReBoot and Shadow Raiders. In fact, those were the only two that I made a point to stay up to date on…

No one has mentioned Wacky Races! …just wondered, who does the image in this post belong to? I’d really like to use it for some band artwork i’m working on. If someone could get back to me on this, it would be greatly appreciated! \m/

I knew of Wacky Races but never got a chance to see it. The Jetsons is also one I had a hard time finding. As for the image, I just found it on the internet to be honest. I usually just look up “old photograph + X” and I usually get cool results. ^_^
