I

Have you seen this?

It’s called Wario Land Shake it.  It’s a 2D platformer for the Wii and all the art is hand done.  Seeing this makes me very happy as I love me 2D games.  But then it got me to thinking about a conversation I had with a producer of mine a few months ago.  He said that 2D can’t make money anymore.  Can’t it?  I know it can’t bring home Halo3 or GTA4 money or anything but it’s not a dead medium.  Nintendo here seems to agree with me I think, other wise why would the put some thing like this out?  2D is games really hit it home with my generation of gamers.  It takes us back to what we used to play and it gives something different to the younger players, with the hopes they’ll pick up on what games use to be like.

I always tell people that 2D or 3D is a design choice in today’s game dev field.  You look at what you want to do and then you can find that matching look and feel.  Mega Man 9, King of Fighters XII, Wario Land Shake It, Braid, Castle Crashers, Odin Sphere, Loco Roco… all these are 2D games in a 3D heavy industry.  It is possible to sell 2D after all.

As I said before… it’s about design choice.  Games don’t have to be 3D be default.
