Chipmunks 3
So during my holidays I got to take in a movie. Things I watch have to be family friendly (unless it’s a date night with Wife) so as a New Years Eve treat, we took the kids to see Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. I know, I know… many have voiced their dislike of the CG designs of the 80’s cartoon we grew up with (I’m assuming that you are all with in the same age as I am), and I agree… mostly. I do like the designs of the main characters. I think they did a good job of making them actual chipmunks unlike the cartoon where they were… I’m not really sure. What I don’t care for is the Chipette CG designs. They just look out of proportion to me. Especially Elenore, her head is HUGE! Brittany was okay and Jeanette just looked odd.
The other thing I found strange is the sexuality that they put in to the Chipettes. The sexy dancing and the scene where they come out all in towels that don’t quite go to the bottom (the below picture isn’t the best sample but the best I could find). I don’t remember them putting that in to the cartoon… but it has been a while. I might have to check that out again.
Over all, the movie was just okay and pretty much what you’d expect from a Chipmunk flick. The kids liked it and that’s what matters. Did you take in a movie on during the holidays?

Hmm, I thought the first movie was ok, but after that I kind of lost interest. The Chipettes are cute, and I too see the sexual themes with them. (Target audience furries maybe?) I dunno…
I did go see Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows over the holiday break. I gotta say, I may go see it again! Great acting and spot on camera work made this movie a must see!

I haven’t seen any of the Sherlock Holmes movies, but they do look really cool.

Hi Joe. If you watch the cartoon series from the 80s, the age of the Chipettes (and the Chipmunks) isn’t really well established. Each episode seems to slide 10 years or so, depending on the (hackneyed) plot for it. (I’m not complaining, just stating a fact.) So in some, Brittany and her sisters were around the maturity of 10-year old humans, and in others they engaged in attitudes like 15-year olds.
However what is much MUCH more telling is the 1987 Chipmunk Adventure. Aside from the music (which I still find personally catchy and appealing), this movie stands heads and shoulders above all other western animation I have ever seen for *panty shots*. I mean the film is just full of them! There some sexual innuendo (though it is innocently played off mostly), but the girls do spend about 1/3rd of the movie in practically transparent harem girl outfits.
If you don’t remember it, check it out. (It’s actually pretty cool if you liked the original designs, IMO. Based on your artwork, I felt sure you had at least seen this movie, and it’s only based on your current comments I doubt you have.)
…. now I am rather tempted to check out these new CG Chipettes. I certainly prefer the original designs, but these don’t look…. bad.

I’ve only seen bits of the old movie cartoon. Maybe I should check it out. It’s interesting to see the sexuality put in to female cartoon characters (like the Chipettes). Who would have wrote that in… or drawn it back in the day? To me, it just screams that some of the original artists must have found these characters sexy or wanted to make them sexy. I wonder what they do now. ^_^

I went and saw the Tintin movie, which was a bit of a… letdown; the cartoon albums were better.
But anyway, I’m glad you got to see a cute movie at least. Maybe it gave you some drawing inspiration? 😉 *nudge nudge hint hint*

I’ve always been interested in Tintin, but never picked up any of the books. Do you recommend avoiding the movie totally?

The Tintin movie *is* well done, with amazing animation and a script which stays very close to the albums, but personally I didn’t feel that it added anything. If you’ve read the albums you’ll probably sit and nod and be pretty content with what you’re watching, but not much more. I’d give it a 3/5. Enjoyable, but probably more so for someone who has never (oh horror) read the albums.

I seem to remember the cartoon movie had a bit of sexy dancing. The movie was called “The Chipmunk Adventure”

I too was amazed by the amount of risque material in “The Chipmunk Adventure”, especially the ‘Getting Lucky’ sequence.

Getting Lucky? o_O Good grief! Now I really have to see this.
