Who, you may ask, was Joe Medicine Crow? He was the last War Chief of the Crow Nation. A distinction he earned in WW2 by leading a patrol behind enemy lines, wherein he disarmed an enemy soldier in hand to hand combat, captured him - but let him live, and then stole enemy horses from their camp (50 of them to be exact). He was also the Crow Nation's official historian, the first from his tribe to get a graduate degree, an author and a Medal of Freedom recipient. Additionally - and this is the icing on the cake - this was a man knew and talked to men who had been at the Battle of Little Bighorn. According to his NY Times obituary he had personally known 4 of the Native American scouts that had been with Custer at the battle, one of whom was his Great Uncle.
