  • What does art mean to you?

Random thought: everyone here is an artist and/or enjoys art of some kind.

I’m heavily interested in almost every art-form, Singing, sculpting, dancing, acting, drawing, playing music, poetry, writing etc etc etc. For me it is a therapeutic thing that helps me release destructive/suicidal/sorrowful/joyful/confused/angered/blah blah emotions without hurting people. However art itself is so much more, I’ve got this whole “art as a glimpse of the soul and every artistic endeavor, such as characters, having a spirit of their own within a world that consists of many different realities and or perceptions of realities” some people find it rather psycho. But I’ve also met allot of people who find art merely something ‘pretty’ to look at, and allot of people who think art is what makes human beings who they are, and allot of people who think art is just a waste of time but still perform in someway that could be classified as an art.

With so many different varieties, and opinions, of art I was wondering what everyone here thought? ‘Getting to know you’, la la la, erm… I mean, so what do you think? What does art mean to you? What do you enjoy about it? And even why do you do what you do (that you do so well) if you are an artist?

    Thanks for your time!

Well, art for me is simply put... a form of communication and just like any other, is made with the intention to provoke certain emotions within the viewer, like creating a scene of chaos, beauty or even lust and just like any other form of communication must be constructed efficiently, so as to create the desired effect, so as to get the communication across.

Like writing coupled with concise paragraphs and flowing grammar (something I should work on ) to create the perfect novel or music which is neatly composed with each sound/instrument in the right place, at the right time... neither one overwhelming the other, to create an awesome symphony or perhaps one wishes to communicate disorder in his/her rhythm and would take a totally different route, so yeah it's all about what your trying to communicate/accomplish.. well at least it is to me :P.

Why do I do it, what is my drive? There have never been any moments in my life more fulfilling than when I have inspired others to improve or just carry on, in art and in life itself. These are the moments I cherish most and are the very reason I push to improve. For a time I lost sight of that, I lost sight of the real "why" but with support from others and the powerful words of a friend found it again, this time around I'll be sure to never let go of the ideals I hold true.

In the end though I guess artist are the dreamers (hehe) of tomorrow, who will create the world we live in.. there is no question to that in my mind.

Art as a form of communication and you want your work to inspire others to improve and/or just keep going. Awesome. Do you mean like with just their art or their lives? Well probably both right? I like it when people enjoy my art enough to want to make their art better, plus I think everyone has the ability to do some form of art. S’why I always encourage people to keep practicing their drawings and/or keep reinforcing that people can sing when they say they can’t. Everyone can sing. And also everyone can be great at art, whichever they choose to follow be it paint, sculpture, or tap dancing.

But I also see it has some emotional significance to you as well, I’m sure some of your pieces are reminders of hard or good times in your life. And the lives of others. I know I have quite a few were me and my best friend use to stay up doodling and talking on instant messenger. Ever draw to inspire yourself? I know I’ve drawn to remind myself to keep going sometimes…

Now I see the whole ‘Dreamer’ name/quote, it comes full circle, nice!

      Thanks for the reply!

Hehe there's no doubt that art can be inspired though emotions, but I was just trying to show that in the end its to get an idea across to a viewer, same as you with your illustrations and poems.. that is in essence a form of communication :P whether it be heart felt or not. If I doodle something for someone close to me.. it's a communication to him/her letting them know, that I appreciate them very much (without the use of words) or if I doodle a pic 'cause I'm sad... perhaps I wanna show ppl exactly how I feel, so I'll spew my emotions all over the paper, but when all said and done it's still just a form of communication... Well, to me it is .

Yeah that quote is the berries! It's from a movie called "Kalifornia" (as I've marked it) I got this incredible tune written by the talents of "Astral Projection" which features those very words, the track itself is called "People can fly" ... just in case anyone was wondering :P

Stoked ya made this topic man.. it is good to see everyones outlook on art... just wish more ppl would post, hint, hint. :P

As far as me trying to draw, it gives me so much more appreciation how much talent, time, and drive it takes for all the artists who do such great work, cause sometimes ya think 'oh this looks so simple' but oh good heavens it is not, and anyone whos seen me draw can tell ya how utterly bad I am

On the end of me viewing art, my initial response to how I feel goes as follows 'dur i like the pretty artz'

I guess I am either too vague in my answers, or way too wordy, and both ways I end up confusing things anways, cause I am not good at explaining me.
