Yard Work
Today I got to some much-needed yard work around the house. It’s been hard to get to because of so much rain we’ve had. Which is totally the opposite of the summer time. I guess we’re making up for it now. It’s great, but sucks at the same time. Every time I figured I’d be able to go and get some yard work done, it goes and rains again! Ugh! That or my weekend was already booked. Thankfully it was nothing but blue skies today so I was able to get it done. Now my house doesn’t look so run down. Wife was even able to put up some fall decorations. Yay!
As I was doing the yard work, I thought about a friend of mine that just bought a house and how he now has all these new responsibilities and a never-ending job list. Oh the joys of owning a home.
Do you own a home? How do you feel about yard work?

Ick, yardwork. I prefer to be an indoor recluse that doesn’t have to put up with gardening at all – it’s not like I spend any amount of time outdoors to begin with to even look at one.
Granted, one of the houses I grew up in during high school had an absolutely enormous lawn with surrounding garden around the outside – big enough to require the use of a ride-on mower, which was the only saving grace. My parents took years to tackle and tame the mess of plants and weeds and everything, and us kids dreaded being coerced into having to help out. We were happy to use excuses like homework or study for exams or the like whenever possible!

Having lived in an apartment building for over a decade, I rarely get to enjoy the backbreaking toil that is lawn care. The only time I get to indulge in it is when I’m visiting my parents. They’re getting up there in years so mowing and raking could be a death sentence for their frail bodies. They live in a wooded area so the leaves are always a foot deep on their lawn.

I have lived in apartments and dormitories for the past 21 years. So, no, I haven’t done much yard work in a while. Before then, we had a huge grassed lawn (over an acre) with several deciduous trees. Raking and mowing were frequent chores. This is on top of weeding and pruning in the garden, and cleaning up after our horses (only two, it wasn’t a farm, but for some reason we had a horse pasture). I have mowed my mother’s lawn a few times over the years, but it is very small, so it only takes a half hour or so. I can’t say I really miss the yard work, but I would like to have my own lawn someday (guess it’s a fair trade-off, right?). Just don’t plan on it being anywhere near as large as the one I grew up with.
